Milwaukee M18 and DEWALT 20V MAX are both nominal 18V cordless systems, but their batteries are generally specific to each brand’s system, and neither maker’s pages we read say batteries cross between brands. For a used buyer the platform you already own usually decides the choice: a bare tool that fits your batteries is the best case, and a bare tool on the wrong platform is the worst.

Models at a glance

Illustrations show the product type, not the specific model. Figures are the manufacturers’ published specifications for new units; “n/c” means we did not find an official figure.

Good fit if

  • You are choosing which cordless platform to buy used tools for.
  • You own batteries for one brand and are tempted by a listing for the other.

Not a fit if

  • You need a tool-by-tool performance comparison — the two example tools below are different tool types and are not a head-to-head test.

Why “18V” and “20V” do not mean different power

DEWALT’s own page explains its 20V MAX figure as the maximum initial voltage with a nominal voltage of 18V, so the two systems are not far apart on paper. The practical difference for a used buyer is not the number in the name but whether the battery in the listing fits the tool you want — and whether you must buy one.

Checks that matter more than price

Rule of thumb

If you own one platform, buy used tools for that platform and compare them on condition and returns. If you own neither, compare complete kits on each side and treat bare tools as incomplete. This is our analysis, not a manufacturer statement.

Current listings

Open an eBay search for each model, split by the condition label you care about. Searches are limited to Buy It Now items (remove that filter on eBay to see auctions).

Search results can include items for parts, empty boxes and accessories. Seller descriptions are the seller’s own statements; we have not verified them.

Frequently asked questions

Is DEWALT 20V more powerful than Milwaukee 18V?

Not necessarily. DEWALT’s own page explains 20V MAX as the maximum initial voltage with a nominal voltage of 18V, so the systems are not far apart on paper.

Do Milwaukee batteries fit DEWALT tools?

We found no manufacturer statement that batteries cross between brands, so do not count batteries from one brand as free for the other.

Does the warranty cover a used tool?

Both makers tie their warranties to the original purchaser, so assume a used tool carries none unless the listing states what applies.

Which platform should I buy into used?

If you own one platform, buy used tools for it and compare on condition and returns. If you own neither, compare complete kits on each side and treat bare tools as incomplete. This is our analysis.
