Used Game Consoles & Controllers on eBay: What to Check
Consoles, handhelds and controllers wear and get modified in ways a listing title rarely says. This hub lists what to confirm before you buy.
- eBay Refurbished (Certified, Excellent, Very Good) on eBay Refurbished under eBay’s Refurbished program for approved sellers. Check eBay’s current terms and the listing for warranty and returns. As an eBay Partner, we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases.
- Used on eBay Pre-owned; the seller describes the condition. Returns and warranty are whatever the listing states.
- Open Box (listed by eBay as “New other”) on eBay Unused or opened-box item. It is not an eBay Refurbished item.
Each button opens an eBay search for “used game console” (Buy It Now only; remove that filter on eBay to see auctions). Listings change daily; we show no prices here. Seller descriptions are the seller’s own statements.
What to check in a gaming listing
- Account removal / console deactivation
Each platform documents steps to prepare a console for a new owner: PlayStation (deactivate, then reset), Xbox (reset to factory defaults for sale), Nintendo (delete user / initialize to unlink the Nintendo Account). Ask: 'Has the console been deactivated / removed from your account and factory reset?'

- Console ban / suspension
PlayStation may suspend a console from its services (console cannot access accounts, online play or Store content); Xbox may ban consoles and says device bans are not eligible for case review; Nintendo's agreement allows banning a console for unauthorized modification. Ask: 'Has this console ever been suspended or banned on PSN / Xbox network / Nintendo online?'
Source: Nintendo Support
- Modification / custom firmware (Nintendo)
Nintendo's user agreement says unauthorized modification can render the console unusable and give Nintendo the right to ban the console or account. Ask: 'Has the console ever been modified, run unofficial software, or used a mod chip?'

- Disc drive (PS5)
PlayStation lists disc-read troubleshooting and says persistent failure may indicate a disc-drive hardware problem; PS5 cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. Ask: 'Does the console read both game discs and Blu-ray/DVD? Any disc errors?'

- Controller stick drift
Nintendo documents Joy-Con stick calibration and service if calibration fails; Xbox says its recalibration tool cannot fix drift caused by normal wear; PlayStation documents DualSense reset and stick-module replacement steps. Ask: 'Any stick drift? Does it pass the stick calibration screen?'
Source: Nintendo Support
- Cables / power adapter included
PlayStation lists the in-box AC power cord, HDMI and USB cables; Nintendo includes an AC adapter and recommends official or licensed adapters because unlicensed ones are untested. Ask: 'Which cables and power adapter are included? Are they original?'

These are general points, not an inspection of any listing. The seller’s description is the seller’s statement; we have not verified it.
Skip used if
- The listing does not disclose the platform, region, or account restrictions.
- The listing does not identify the included controllers, headset, charging cable, or game.
Used, Open Box or Refurbished?
- Used
- Open Box (New other)
- eBay Refurbished – Certified
- eBay Refurbished – Excellent
- eBay Refurbished – Very Good
- eBay Refurbished – Good
- Seller refurbished
- For parts or not working
eBay uses defined condition labels, and they are not interchangeable. An ordinary “Open Box” (listed by eBay as “New other”) is not a “Certified” anything; a seller’s own repair is not an eBay Refurbished item. Check the condition value and any warranty on the listing itself.
