Used Audio Gear on eBay: What to Check Before You Buy
Used audio gear ranges from near-new headphones to decades-old receivers. This hub lists what to check for each and what to ask the seller.
- eBay Refurbished (Certified, Excellent, Very Good) on eBay Refurbished under eBay’s Refurbished program for approved sellers. Check eBay’s current terms and the listing for warranty and returns. As an eBay Partner, we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases.
- Used on eBay Pre-owned; the seller describes the condition. Returns and warranty are whatever the listing states.
- Open Box (listed by eBay as “New other”) on eBay Unused or opened-box item. It is not an eBay Refurbished item.
Each button opens an eBay search for “used audio receiver” (Buy It Now only; remove that filter on eBay to see auctions). Listings change daily; we show no prices here. Seller descriptions are the seller’s own statements.
What to check in a audio listing
- Ear pads / cushions
Manufacturers sell model-specific replacement cushion kits (e.g. Bose), so worn pads can be replaced but must match the model. Ask for close-up photos of both ear pads and the headband.

- Battery (wireless products)
Apple documents battery service for AirPods and Samsung/Apple document battery diagnostics; wireless audio batteries degrade and service terms are model- and warranty-specific (see page). Ask: 'How many hours does it last per charge now?'

- Left/right channel balance
Apple lists left/right volume difference causes for AirPods (debris on speaker mesh, charge state); Microsoft documents testing a second device to rule out hardware failure when one channel is silent. Ask: 'Do both sides play at equal volume? Any crackle on either side?'

- 110/220 V voltage selector
Yamaha's manual says the rear voltage selector must be set for local voltage before plugging in; improper setting may damage the unit and create a fire hazard. Ask for a photo of the rear label and voltage selector.

- Tubes / valves and bias
Marshall states its DSL20 is cathode-biased so power valves need no biasing when replaced; Vox's manual says tubes can break from impact and need repair. Replacement requirements depend on the model's manual. Ask: 'When were the tubes last replaced? Which type?'

- The listing does not disclose the driver condition, battery health, or connector damage.
- The listing does not identify the included cable, stand, case, or accessories.
Used, Open Box or Refurbished?
- Used
- Open Box (New other)
- eBay Refurbished – Certified
- eBay Refurbished – Excellent
- eBay Refurbished – Very Good
- eBay Refurbished – Good
- Seller refurbished
- For parts or not working
eBay uses defined condition labels, and they are not interchangeable. An ordinary “Open Box” (listed by eBay as “New other”) is not a “Certified” anything; a seller’s own repair is not an eBay Refurbished item. Check the condition value and any warranty on the listing itself.
