eBay Condition Labels Explained: Refurbished, Used, Open Box and For Parts
An eBay listing has one condition value, and it decides how much you can rely on the rest of the page. The same camera, laptop or drill can appear as “Used”, “Open Box”, “Seller refurbished” or one of the eBay Refurbished grades, and those labels are not interchangeable. This guide explains each label using eBay’s own definitions, shows what changes in practice and tells you which label to search first for your situation.

Why the label matters more than the title
Sellers write titles. eBay sets the list of condition values a seller can pick from, and each one has a definition on eBay’s developer documentation. A title that says “refurbished” or “like new” is the seller’s wording; the condition value on the listing is the field eBay actually uses to filter and to decide which protections can apply. When the two disagree, trust the condition value and the seller’s written description of the item, then check the return terms.
The definitions below are eBay’s, written for sellers choosing a value. They do not guarantee the real state of one particular item, and we have not inspected any listing. We link to eBay’s pages so you can read the current wording, because eBay can change it.

eBay Refurbished: what the program page says
The eBay Refurbished program has four grades: Certified, Excellent, Very Good and Good. According to eBay’s program page at our review date, Certified items come from the manufacturer, the brand or its contracted authorized reseller, while Excellent, Very Good and Good are sold by third-party sellers that eBay screens and monitors.
On the same page eBay states that a warranty administered by Allstate starts on the purchase date and is registered automatically: two years for Certified and one year for Excellent, Very Good and Good. It also states that most items come with 30-day free returns, with exceptions. Warranty length, exclusions and return terms are eBay’s to change, so read the terms shown on the listing itself and see eBay’s current terms before you buy.
Seller refurbished is a different thing
The word “refurbished” also appears in listings that are not in the eBay Refurbished program. eBay’s program page says that the “Seller Refurbished” condition is not part of the official eBay Refurbished program, but a listing condition defined by an individual seller. Do not read an eBay warranty into a Seller refurbished listing unless the listing itself states one.
Used and Open Box: where the risk moves to you
- Used (3000) can be excellent value, but the protections are whatever the seller states. Ask what “working” was tested, and read the return window before the price.
- Open Box (1500) means unused according to the definition, yet packaging may be missing or opened and the item may be a factory second or have defects. It is not a refurbished grade.
- Neither label includes the Refurbished warranty. If a listing mentions a warranty, it must say who provides it and for how long.
Which label should you search first?
This is our analysis, not eBay’s: the right starting point depends on what you care about.
- Warranty and returns matter most. Start with eBay Refurbished and read the terms on the listing.
eBay Refurbished on eBay - Price matters most and you can check the item yourself. Start with Used and filter out parts-only items by reading descriptions.
Used on eBay - You want an unused item and can accept missing or opened packaging. Start with Open Box and read the seller’s details about defects.

Common mix-ups
- A seller who repaired an item is not an eBay Refurbished seller.
- A listing titled “Certified” is not necessarily in the Certified – Refurbished condition; check the condition value.
- Search results include items “for parts or not working”, empty boxes and accessories next to working items; our search links restrict the condition so the results are closer to what you asked for, but eBay’s search is not a guarantee.
- A seller’s feedback score is the seller’s history, not a statement about this item.
How to check a label on a listing
Open the listing and find the condition line near the price. Then read the seller’s item description for any condition notes, check the photos for the actual item (not a stock photo), and open the returns section. If the condition value and the description disagree, ask the seller before you buy. Our guide How to read an eBay listing walks through the rest of the page.
Frequently asked questions
Is “Open Box” the same as refurbished on eBay?
No. Open Box is listed by eBay as “New other” and means an unused item whose packaging may be missing or opened. Refurbished grades are a separate program with their own conditions.
Is there a certified open-box label on eBay?
We found no certified open-box condition value in eBay’s documentation. Treat that phrase in a title as the seller’s wording.
What is the difference between Certified and Excellent Refurbished?
Per eBay’s program page, Certified items come from the manufacturer, brand or its contracted authorized reseller, and Excellent comes from a third-party seller eBay screens and monitors. The listed warranty lengths differ; see eBay’s current terms.
Does Seller refurbished include an eBay warranty?
eBay’s program page says Seller Refurbished is not part of the official eBay Refurbished program. Only a warranty stated on the listing applies.
Which condition has the most risk?
Used and Open Box leave more to the seller’s description. “For parts or not working” items are not working items.
