Bare Tool vs Kit: Which Used Cordless Tool Listing Is Actually Cheaper?

A bare tool is the body only — no battery, no charger. A kit includes them. A bare tool is only cheaper if you already own batteries and a charger for that exact system. If you don’t, add the cost of a battery and charger to the bare-tool price and compare that total with the kit.

Models at a glance

Illustrations show the product type, not the specific model. Figures are the manufacturers’ published specifications for new units; “n/c” means we did not find an official figure.

Good fit if

  • You already own a battery platform and want to add a tool (bare may win).
  • You are starting a platform from scratch (a kit usually makes sense).

Not a fit if

  • You need a specific model’s torque or runtime — check the manufacturer’s specifications for that model.

Two manufacturer examples

Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1/4" hex impact driver 29532953-20: the driver and a belt clip; Milwaukee lists 0 batteries included2953-22: the driver, two M18 REDLITHIUM XC5.0 batteries, an M18 & M12 multi-voltage charger, a case and a belt clip
DEWALT 20V MAX XR 1/2-in drill/driver DCD800DCD800B: DEWALT states it does not include a battery or chargerDCD800D2: two DCB203 2Ah batteries, a DCB112 charger and a kit bag

Source: the manufacturers’ product pages. Milwaukee’s 2953-20 page was the Tool Only version; the older 2853 page says it is no longer available and points to 2953. A used listing can differ from these new-product lists, so confirm what the seller shows.

Warranty on a used tool

Both makers tie their warranty to the first buyer. DEWALT’s warranty text says it extends only to the original end-user purchaser and that it may decline claims for product bought from unauthorized sellers; Milwaukee’s says it covers the original purchaser. Neither document says a second owner is covered, so do not assume the manufacturer warranty comes with a used tool unless the listing states what applies.

Rule of thumb

If you own the platform: compare bare tools by condition and returns. If you don’t: compare complete kits, and treat a bare tool as incomplete. This is our analysis, not a manufacturer statement.

Current listings

We don’t show individual listings, prices or stock here: they change by the hour and we haven’t checked any. Current listings are on eBay — the buttons below open an eBay search limited to Buy It Now items (remove that filter on eBay to see auctions).

Search results can include items for parts, empty boxes and accessories. Seller descriptions are the seller’s own statements; we have not verified them.
