Buying a Used iPad: Activation Lock, Model Number and Battery Checks

A used iPad can look perfect and still be unusable to you. Before the price, confirm that it is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account, which exact model it is, and what you can and cannot learn about its battery. Apple’s advice is not to take ownership of a used iPad that is protected by Activation Lock.

Good fit if
- You are comparing used or refurbished iPads on eBay and want to know what to ask the seller.
Not a fit if
- You need a model recommendation by price — we show no prices and do not rank listings.
Activation Lock and the previous owner
Apple says Activation Lock turns on automatically when Find My is turned on, and that before you buy an iPad from someone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller you should make sure the device is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s account. On iPadOS 15 or later, a device still protected shows a “Locked to Owner” screen; Apple says not to take ownership of a used iPad that is protected by Activation Lock. If a passcode screen or the Home Screen appears, the device has not been erased.
Apple also says that a part from a device that was protected by Activation Lock when the part was removed can be ineligible for service under the Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare. Ask the seller whether the iPad has had repairs.
Identify the exact model
“iPad Pro”, “iPad Air” and “iPad” each cover several generations. Apple’s “Identify your iPad model” page lists every iPad by model number, found on the back of the device. Ask the seller for the model number, match it on Apple’s page, and compare generation, storage size and cellular or Wi-Fi-only before comparing prices. We do not give a model-by-model spec table here because we have not collected one for each generation.
What to confirm on a used one
- Erased and removed from the previous owner’s account. Ask the seller to confirm in writing, and ask for a photo of the setup screen after a reset if the listing does not show it.
- Whether it was ever owned by a company or school. We did not find an Apple document specific to iPad that we can cite on checking this, so ask directly.
- Battery. Apple says iPad batteries are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles. Apple documents a Battery Health screen (Settings > Battery > Battery Health, showing cycle count and manufacture date) only for the models it lists — iPad Pro (M4 and M5), iPad Air (M2, M3 and M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro and A20 Pro) and iPad (A16). For other iPads we found no Apple-documented battery history, so treat wear as unknown and ask what the seller can show.
- Storage size and cellular or Wi-Fi-only, as listed.
- What is included: charger and cable are often missing.
Reading the eBay condition
“Used”, “Open Box” (eBay’s New other) and eBay Refurbished grades mean different things; see Refurbished vs used laptops. A seller who repaired an iPad is not an eBay Refurbished program seller. Apple’s own warranty terms for a new device are not a promise that comes with a used one — read what the listing states.

- Open Box (New other)
- eBay Refurbished – Certified
- eBay Refurbished – Excellent
- eBay Refurbished – Very Good
