ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 vs Gen 3 (Intel, Used): What Lenovo’s Specifications Change

The Gen 3 moves from 11th to 12th Gen Intel Core, lists HDMI 2.1 instead of 2.0, and adds some BIOS security options. Memory capacity is the same on Lenovo’s sheets. One thing runs the other way: the Gen 2 lists a 50 Wh battery while the Gen 3 lists 39.3 Wh or 52.5 Wh depending on configuration, so check which battery a Gen 3 listing has. Both pages are for the Intel versions; the AMD T14 models are separate products.

Which one to look at first
- Look at the Gen 3 if the newer processor generation and HDMI 2.1 matter to you.
See ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 (Intel) on eBay - Look at the Gen 2 if the listing suits you and the saving matters; its 50 Wh battery is the larger of the two documented sizes only when the Gen 3 has the 39.3 Wh option.
See ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (Intel) on eBay - Read the battery in the listing. For a used laptop, the wear on a battery matters more than the capacity Lenovo printed.
- Lenovo’s sheets do not give a support end date for either model, so we state none. This is our analysis, not a Lenovo statement.
What to confirm on a used one
- Intel or AMD. The Intel and AMD T14s share a name, and the memory and processor lines differ.
- The exact generation. Ask for the model name from the label or the BIOS screen.
- BIOS passwords. Lenovo lists supervisor, power-on and NVMe passwords as security features, so a used unit can have one set. Ask the seller to show the BIOS screen. We found no Lenovo document to cite for clearing a forgotten one.
- Company management. Ask the seller to confirm in writing that it is not enrolled; we have no manufacturer document to cite on checking this.
