Used Camera Buying Checklist: What to Confirm Before You Buy on eBay

Before buying a used camera, confirm seven things in the listing or by asking the seller: exact model, shutter count, sensor condition, mount and lens state, what is included, return terms, and the eBay condition label. If a seller won’t answer, treat the item as unknown. This is a general checklist from us, not an inspection of any listing.
Good fit if
- You are comparing used camera bodies or lenses on eBay.
Not a fit if
- You want someone to inspect the camera for you — we do not.
The checklist
- Exact model
Full name on the body in photos (for example “EOS R6 Mark II” vs “EOS R6”).
If the listing is silent: Ask, or skip.
- Shutter count
A stated count or EXIF data from a recent photo. Rated life differs by model — look up the manufacturer’s figure only if one is published (Sony Japan published about 200,000 for the α7 III; we found none for the Canon R6 or R6 Mark II). The R6 Mark II’s [Battery info] shot count covers only the current battery and resets on recharge, so it is not a shutter count.
If the listing is silent: Treat as unknown.
- Sensor
Clear sensor photo or sample image; no scratches or dead pixels.
If the listing is silent: Ask for a photo.
- Mount and lens
Glass free of scratches, haze or fungus; aperture, focus and stabilizer work.
If the listing is silent: Ask what was tested.
- Included items
Battery, charger, strap, body cap, card slot covers. “Body only” is not a kit.
If the listing is silent: Assume not included.
- Returns
Whether returns are accepted, for how long and who pays return shipping.
If the listing is silent: Read the listing’s return terms before buying.
- Condition label
eBay’s label (Used, Open Box/“New other”, a Refurbished grade, For parts or not working). See the definitions.
If the listing is silent: Do not rely on the title alone.
What the eBay labels mean
An ordinary open-box item is listed by eBay as “New other” — it is not “Certified” anything. A seller who repaired a camera is not an eBay Refurbished program seller. Details: Refurbished vs used.
- Used
- Open Box (New other)
- eBay Refurbished – Certified
- eBay Refurbished – Excellent
- eBay Refurbished – Very Good
- eBay Refurbished – Good
- Seller refurbished
- For parts or not working
Common traps
- “For parts or not working”, empty boxes and accessories appear in the same results as working cameras.
- A cheap body can need a battery, charger or lens that wipes out the savings.
- A seller’s feedback score is the seller’s history, not a guarantee about this camera.
Current listings
We have not joined the eBay Partner Network yet, so links to eBay on this site are plain links and we earn nothing from them today. We may earn a commission in the future if we join.
We don’t show individual listings, prices or stock here: they change by the hour and we haven’t checked any. Current listings are on eBay — the buttons below open an eBay search limited to Buy It Now items (remove that filter on eBay to see auctions).
