Best Used Mirrorless Cameras: Which Older Models Are Still Worth Buying

If you want a full-frame mirrorless body for less than a current model, three older bodies are worth comparing first: the Sony α7 III, the Canon EOS R6 and the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. The right one depends mostly on your lens mount, whether you shoot fast action, and what the seller includes. This list is short on purpose: we only list models whose specifications we have read in the manufacturer’s own documentation, and we will add more as we do.

Good fit if
- You want a full-frame body and are comfortable buying used.
- You already own, or plan to buy, lenses for Sony E or Canon RF.
Not a fit if
- You need the newest autofocus or video features — check current models first.
- You do not want to check the seller’s photos, description and return terms yourself.

Official specifications as printed by Sony and Canon, shortened to the numbers: MP = effective megapixels; fps = shots per second (Canon: mechanical / electronic shutter); weight is with battery and card. The highest value in a row is highlighted. Battery figures use each maker’s own test conditions and lenses, so they are not directly comparable between brands.
Used flagship or new entry-level?
A common choice is an older high-end body versus a brand-new entry-level one at a similar budget. Specifications can’t settle this alone; these are the questions that usually do:
- Lens mount first. Bodies and lenses must match (Sony E vs Canon RF). Buying into a mount you will outgrow costs more than any body saving.
- Condition risk. A new body has a full return window and manufacturer warranty from the seller; a used one has only what the listing states. Read the return terms and any warranty on the specific listing.
- What the listing includes. Many used bodies come without a battery charger, strap or card. Add those to the price before comparing.
- Features you will actually use. Compare burst speed, card slots and battery life from the table above against the entry-level model’s official specs.
Which one to look at first
- Choose the Sony α7 III if you are in, or moving to, the Sony E-mount system and want two card slots (Sony’s battery figures use different test conditions from Canon’s, so don’t compare them directly).
- Choose the Canon EOS R6 if you are in the Canon RF system and want fast bursts without paying for the Mark II. See the R6 vs R6 Mark II comparison.
- Choose the Canon EOS R6 Mark II if higher resolution, a faster electronic shutter and better listed battery life matter more than saving money.

Run through the used camera checklist. Search results for any body often include “for parts or not working” items, empty boxes and accessories — these are not working cameras. Model-specific notes: Is a used Sony α7 III still worth buying?
